ISO’s formal definition of accreditation is “third party attestation related to a conformity assessment body (CAB) conveying formal demonstration of its competence to carry out specific conformity assessment tasks.” (ISO/ IEC 17000:2004)

Certification is "third party attestation related to products, processes, systems or persons." (ISO/ IEC 17000:2004)

Accreditation and Certification are regularly used interchangeably. However, in the conformity assessment industry both terms have very specific meanings. In layman’s terms accreditation can be described as “certifying the certifiers”. Conformity assessment bodies (CABs), more widely known as Certification Bodies, are accredited after they successfully undergo a process of assessment by an accreditation body like Global Accreditation UK (GAUK), to ensure they meet international standards that among other things assess the bodies impartiality and competence.
Certification is undertaken by an accredited CAB and is a process by which an independent and competent third party certifies that a product, system or person, conforms to specific requirements.

Conformity assessment bodies (CAB) are those which provide certification and/ or inspection services.

ISO International Standards ensure that products and services are safe, reliable and of good quality. For business, they are strategic tools that reduce costs by minimizing waste and errors, and increasing productivity. They help companies to access new markets, level the playing field for developing countries and facilitate free and fair global trade.

Organizations and companies often want to get certified to ISO’s management system standards (for example ISO 9001 or ISO 14001) although certification is not a requirement. The best reason for wanting to implement these standards is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of company operations. A company may decide to seek certification for many reasons, as certification may:  be a contractual or regulatory requirement  be necessary to meet customer preferences  fall within the context of a risk management programme, and  help motivate staff by setting a clear goal for the development of its Management system.

Global Accreditation UK (GAUK) only accredits organisations who provide certification and/ or inspection services. These organisations are known as Conformity Assessment Bodies (or CABs).

Each Certification body has a procedure to resolve the complaints, disputes and appeals. The company should first write to the certification body for resolution of the complaint, dispute or appeal. In case the certification body is not able to satisfy the company raising complaint, dispute or appeal, then the company can directly approach Global Accreditation UK (GAUK) with complete details of the matter for redressal. Global Accreditation UK (GAUK) will discuss the matter with certification body in order to resolve the issue. If the complaint/dispute or appeal does not have the name and address of the sender and/or is not accompanied by the relevant evidence of the basis of complaint and the effort to resolve the complaint with the Certification Body, Global Accreditation UK (GAUK) will reserve the right to decide whether to process the complaint, Dispute or appeal or not.

Global Accreditation UK (GAUK) does not provide training in these areas. An internet search in which you specify the type of training, the standard, and preferred location should produce a list of training organisations.

The Export related requirements are country specific. Global Accreditation UK (GAUK) does not have information on export requirements.
